Reading a cron expression

A cron expression has five fields separated by spaces. Each field limits when the job can run. A job runs when every field matches the current minute.

field order
┌───────── minute (0-59)
│ ┌─────── hour (0-23)
│ │ ┌───── day of month (1-31)
│ │ │ ┌─── month (1-12 or JAN-DEC)
│ │ │ │ ┌─ day of week (0-7 or SUN-SAT, 0 and 7 are Sunday)
│ │ │ │ │
30 2 * * 1 # 02:30 every Monday

The day-of-month and day-of-week trap

If you set both a day of month and a day of week, cron runs when either matches. 0 4 15 * 1 runs on the 15th and on every Monday, not only on Mondays that fall on the 15th.

Limitations

  • This builder uses standard five-field cron. Quartz-style seconds fields and special characters such as L, W and # are not supported.
  • Run times are calculated in your browser. They do not account for a server clock that is out of sync.

Questions

Why did my job run an hour early or late?

Daylight saving time. In zones that change clocks, a job at 02:30 may be skipped or run twice on the change night. Schedule important jobs outside 01:00 to 03:00, or run the server on UTC.

What does @daily mean?

It is a shortcut for 0 0 * * *, midnight every day. Others are @hourly, @weekly, @monthly and @reboot. Not every cron daemon supports them.

Why does my command work in the terminal but not in cron?

Cron runs with a minimal environment and a short PATH. Use full paths to programs and files, and log the output so you can see the error.
