HTTP Status Checker
Paste up to 20 URLs and see what each one returns: a working page, a redirect and where it ends up, or an error. Useful after a site move or before you submit a sitemap.
When to use a bulk status check
- After moving pages or a whole site. Paste the old URLs and confirm each one now redirects to a page that returns 200.
- Before submitting a sitemap. Search engines expect every URL in a sitemap to return 200. Redirects and errors there waste crawl time.
- When a report lists broken links. Recheck them in one go to see which are really broken and which were temporary.
Reading the results
| Group | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
2xx | The page loaded. | Nothing, unless the page should have moved. |
3xx | The URL redirects somewhere else. | Check the final URL is right. Update internal links and sitemaps to point straight at it. |
4xx | The request was refused or the page is missing. 404 means not found, 410 means removed on purpose, 403 means forbidden. | Redirect moved pages. Remove links to deleted ones. |
5xx | The server failed while answering. | Check the server's error log. A 502 or 504 usually means PHP or an upstream app stopped responding. |
Limitations
- We check up to 20 URLs per run and follow at most 10 redirects per URL.
- Some sites block automated requests or return 403 to anything that is not a real browser, even when the page works for people. If a result looks wrong, try another "Request as" option.
- Requests come from our server, so pages that differ by country or require a login may show a different status for you.
Questions
Why does a page that works in my browser show 403 here?
Firewalls and bot protection services often block requests from data centres. The page is fine for visitors; it is our request that was refused. The same block may affect some search engine crawlers, so it is worth checking your firewall rules.
What is a soft 404?
A page that says "not found" to people but returns status 200. This tool only reads the status code, so a soft 404 shows as 200. Google Search Console reports soft 404s it finds.
